Orion Research · A hypothesis by Landon Thomas

Temporal
Pressure.

Could time be the physical process that continually gives rise to change—and could spacetime, gravity, and cosmic expansion be expressions of that same underlying process?

Version 1 · Public conceptual summary ·

The central idea

A deeper temporal process.
Several possible expressions.

Temporal Pressure is the working title for a proposed underlying temporal process or field. In this picture, the evolving universe is an expression of that process. The following connections are hypotheses to investigate.

01 / Spacetime

Geometry as an emergent description

The proposal asks whether the time dimension and the geometry of spacetime emerge from a more fundamental temporal process that continually gives rise to new physical states.

02 / Gravity

Local gradients in a temporal field

Gravity is considered as a possible observable consequence of local gradients within that field. The suggestion is a conceptual explanation to be formulated and tested.

03 / Cosmic expansion

One process across different scales

The hypothesis explores whether the phenomenon described as dark energy could be the large-scale expression of the same field whose local variations would appear as gravity.

What the terms mean here

The concept,
in plain language.

Temporal process or field means the proposed physical basis of ongoing change. It is the central conjecture of this account.

Emergent spacetime means that the geometry we describe as space and time could arise from that deeper process.

Temporal gradients means proposed local variations in the field. Their possible connection with gravity remains to be expressed mathematically.

These are conceptual descriptions. “Temporal Pressure” has no quantitative definition, assigned units, or measurement procedure in this public summary; the word “pressure” does not by itself establish a physical mechanism.

Ways to picture the idea

Two analogies.
One question beneath them.

Analogies make the proposed relationship easier to imagine. They illustrate the concept without supplying a mechanism or evidence for it.

The projector

Reality continually taking form

A projected image appears because a projector produces it. Picture physical reality in a similar way: each new state arises through an underlying temporal process. The analogy expresses the proposal that time participates in the generation of reality.

The analogy makes no claim that the universe literally consists of film frames.

The river

A persistent pattern within a flow

A whirlpool keeps a recognizable form while remaining part of a flowing river. In this analogy, matter is imagined as a persistent pattern within a deeper temporal process. It offers an intuitive picture of how an apparent object might emerge from something more fundamental.

A physical account would still need to explain which patterns are possible and how they behave.

Spacetime & the fourth dimension

Asking what could
underlie the geometry.

Relativity describes events in four-dimensional spacetime, with three spatial coordinates and a time coordinate. In general relativity, spacetime curvature is connected with gravity. Background: Einstein Online, Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics.

Temporal Pressure asks whether this geometry could be the observable expression of a deeper temporal process. A viable model would need to explain how the established description is recovered and identify where a new observation could distinguish the proposal.

The suggested connection between gravity and dark energy is also an open hypothesis. Cosmic acceleration motivates the question; it does not establish a temporal field. Background: NASA’s overview of dark energy.

Current status & open work

A conceptual proposal.
The tests still need to be defined.

This public account offers a physical interpretation and explanatory analogies. It presents no governing equations, quantitative predictions, or experimental results validating the hypothesis.

Formalization

Define the proposed field

Specify its physical quantities, units, dynamics, and relationship to spacetime. Explain what a “gradient” represents and how it would connect with an observation.

Consistency

Recover the existing evidence

Show how the proposal accounts for observations already explained by established physics, and state the conditions under which the descriptions agree.

Distinctive prediction

Identify a result that could differ

Derive an observable outcome that distinguishes the proposal from existing explanations, with a measurement and a result that could count against it.

These are requirements for developing and assessing the proposal, rather than predictions or results already obtained.

The scope of this note

Foundational research,
with its own burden of evidence.

This is Landon Thomas’s conceptual research hypothesis. Orion’s engineering programs have their own objectives and development status. Any relationship between this hypothesis and materials, fusion, or propulsion requires an explicit argument and evidence of its own.

The public account shares the idea and its open questions. Proprietary engineering methods and implementation details remain outside its scope.

Constructive discussion

Make the idea
more precise.

Questions about the proposed temporal field, its connection with spacetime, or the gravity–dark-energy relationship are welcome. So are critiques of the reasoning and suggestions for what would make the proposal testable.
